OPERATION WOBURN WILDIFE

We are Woburn residents advocating for stronger rodent prevention methods, environmentally safe controls, and effective policies as a means to reduce rodent activity and to end the use anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARS/ FGARS) within the city borders.

What are Anticoagulant Rodenticides?

Anticoagulant rodenticides are a family of poisons most commonly used for rodent control. When ingested, they cause the animal, pet, or person to bleed to death. These materials bioaccumulate up the food chain which creates high risk of secondary poisoning and death to the natural rodent predators, pets, and people.

Focus: Rodent PreVENTION and Safe Rodent Controls

A Community in Action

Since 2023, our team of Woburn residents, city officials, and conservation commissioners have been reducing the use of Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticide (SGAR) products across the city. Actions such as community outreach, education, neighborhood rat walks, library events for safe rodent control, implementing IPM in orders of conditions on permits, and rodent mitigation pilot studies are on-going. Our work and partnership with Cape Ann Wildlife has resulted in the Necropsy and Anticoagulant Screening case document which includes 5 birds of prey cases from Woburn. It has led to the protocols used for the EwA Rat Poison Brigade in partnership with Earthwise Aware. Much work remains to be done which includes passage of a city ordinance to prohibit the use of SGAR products on municipal property. Please contact us for more information and to join our team today.

Mystic Lake Bald Eagle "MK" (April 2016 - March 1, 2023)

"MK", her mate "KZ" and their offspring, 25C, 26C, 29C, and 46C were regular visitors at Horn Pond in Woburn.

She died from Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticide poisoning on Feb 28, 2023 after ingesting poisoned prey. She is the 4th Bald Eagle in Massachusetts to die from rodenticide poisoning since 2021.Her offspring, 25C, died on July 23, 2021, from Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticide poisoning.

The other 2 Bald Eagles to die from rodenticide poisoning are an adult female from Waltham and an adult female from Saugus. Read the public record for the 4 Bald Eagle Deaths in Massachusetts Since 2021

Rodenticides Are Killing Massachusetts Wildlife; Will Authorities Step Up?

The Animal Law & Policy Clinic at Harvard Law School has petitioned the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) and the Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs for the immediate suspension of the registrations of anticoagulant rodenticide products that are killing the natural rodent consuming species such as eagles, owls, hawks, fox, and coyote, as well as domestic pets and people throughout the Commonwealth.
